The bizarre trend reportedly began at a cosplay convention in San Jose, where female cosplayers soaked their feet in buckets of fruit juice and lemonade before selling cups of the liquid to willing customers. Now, it’s spread to China.
At the Firefly Comic Con in Guangzhou, cosplayers were reportedly selling lemon and cola-flavoured foot-bath drinks for around 50 yuan, or roughly 10 Australian dollars, a cup. And disturbingly, there was no shortage of customers.
Videos circulating on Chinese social media showed crowds lining up, with some customers drinking directly from the containers. The stunt sparked widespread criticism, and convention organisers eventually expelled those involved and promised to ban similar stalls in future.
So apparently we’ve reached a point where ordering a drink requires the question:
“Does that come with ice… or toes?”
