Researchers at Stanford University have developed a system called BurgerAI, which analysed more than 2,200 burger recipes and over 140 different ingredients to create entirely new burger combinations. The goal wasn’t just to make them taste good—it was also to improve nutrition and reduce environmental impact.
The surprising part? In blind taste tests involving more than 100 diners, several of the AI-designed burgers scored just as well—or even better—than a McDonald’s Big Mac for flavour, texture and overall enjoyment. One mushroom-based burger dramatically reduced its environmental footprint, while a bean burger almost doubled the nutritional score of the Big Mac.
It raises an interesting question… if an AI-designed burger tastes better than your favourite takeaway burger, would you order it? Or does knowing a computer came up with the recipe take away some of the magic?
