Good news for coffee lovers – your daily brew might be doing more than just waking you up. According to new advice from the American Heart Association, most healthy adults can safely enjoy up to five cups of coffee a day – around 400 milligrams of caffeine – without increasing their risk of heart disease.
Even better, studies suggest drinking three to five cups daily may actually be linked to a lower risk of heart disease, stroke, heart failure and Type 2 diabetes.
Before you rush off for cup number six, experts say everyone reacts differently to caffeine. Some people experience jitters, anxiety or trouble sleeping after only a couple of coffees, while others tolerate more without issue.
One final tip – how you drink your coffee matters. Filtered coffee is considered the healthiest option, while sugary syrups and creamy extras can quickly undo many of the health benefits. So yes, enjoy that flat white… just don’t overdo the toppings!
