That classic “V” sign pose in selfies could reportedly carry more risk than people realise. Security experts are warning that high resolution smartphone cameras and advanced AI software may now be capable of capturing fingerprint details from photos, potentially exposing personal biometric information online.

Chinese security expert Li Chang recently demonstrated the issue on television, showing how fingerprints visible in close range selfies could potentially be extracted using AI enhanced image technology. According to the demonstration, fingerprints become particularly vulnerable when photos are taken within 1.5 metres, especially when fingers directly face the camera.

Experts say lighting, focus, and image quality all play a role, meaning fingerprint theft is still far from simple. However, researchers warn that as AI and camera technology continue improving, even everyday social media photos may present unexpected privacy concerns. Some experts now recommend slightly blurring fingertips before posting close up selfies online.
