As winter settles in across Australia, plenty of backyards are coming to life with fire pits, but before you light one up, it’s worth knowing the rules.

The biggest mistake people make is using a fire pit during a Total Fire Ban. It doesn’t matter if it’s small or contained, lighting one during a ban can attract hefty penalties.

Where you place your fire pit is just as important. Set it up on a non-flammable surface like concrete or pavers, keep it well clear of trees, fences and outdoor furniture, and never leave it unattended.

What you burn also matters. Stick to clean, dry firewood and avoid treated or painted timber, which can release harmful chemicals and create excessive smoke.

And don’t forget the neighbours. If smoke becomes a nuisance, councils can investigate complaints.

A little common sense and a quick check of local fire restrictions can help keep everyone safe while you enjoy a cosy winter night outdoors.
