Tasmania decided to give winter one last surprise on Sunday, with Hobart enjoying an unusually warm day and leaving several mainland capitals in its wake.
The Tasmanian capital reached 20.7°C at 2:23pm, comfortably exceeding its forecast maximum of 18°C and making it warmer than Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney during the afternoon.
While Hobart was soaking up temperatures above 20 degrees, Melbourne was sitting around 15°C, Adelaide around 18°C and Sydney around 19°C.
And Hobart wasn’t even Tasmania’s warmest spot.
St Helens topped the state at 23.1°C, while Friendly Beaches reached 21.5°C and Fingal climbed to 21.7°C. Campania recorded 20.4°C, with Bushy Park also reaching the 20-degree mark.
It wasn’t sunshine and T-shirts everywhere, though. Tasmania’s west coast remained considerably cooler, with Strahan and Cape Sorell both reaching just 13.2°C.
Up on kunanyi/Mount Wellington, conditions were even more wintry, with temperatures around 9.5°C and powerful winds adding some bite. Overnight gusts reached 109km/h.
The little taste of spring won’t necessarily hang around either.
Hobart is expected to reach around 17°C on Monday before temperatures climb again on Tuesday. Showers are then expected to become a regular feature through the second half of the week, with maximum temperatures dropping back into the mid-teens.
Still, for one Sunday afternoon at least, Hobart had bragging rights over the mainland.
Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide… beaten by Hobart in August. That one might sting.
