The buzzz Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)
If you like your horror movies packed with suspense, gruesome surprises and a healthy dose of dark humour, the latest Resident Evil might be right up your alley!
Directed by Zach Cregger, the filmmaker behind Barbarian and Weapons, this latest instalment breathes new life into the popular video game franchise, delivering a fast paced adventure that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
The story follows Bryan (Austin Abrams), an unsuspecting medical courier whose seemingly routine delivery turns into a terrifying fight for survival. What follows is a chaotic night filled with horrifying creatures, unexpected encounters and plenty of moments that’ll have you gripping your cinema seat.
But here’s where Resident Evil gets interesting.
Rather than relying entirely on blood, guts and jump scares, the film cleverly mixes genuine horror with some surprisingly funny moments. Just when things become unbearably tense, a well timed piece of humour breaks the tension.
And it works!
Abrams delivers an entertaining performance as an ordinary guy caught in extraordinary circumstances, while the impressive creature effects and relentless action keep things moving.
At around 94 minutes, the film doesn’t overstay its welcome either.
The buzzz Verdict:
After catching Resident Evil, our verdict is a very respectable four stars.
It’s gruesome, occasionally hilarious and thoroughly entertaining. Certainly not one for the squeamish, but if you enjoy horror with a wicked sense of humour, this one’s worth checking out.
