Hasbro has announced some major changes on the way for the iconic board game Monopoly.
As Popular Mechanics reported, the role of the banker is being eliminated from the game—along with the colourful paper bills players use to buy properties.
Instead of cash, Hasbro is introducing Monopoly App Banking, a concept that replaces the banker with smartphones, with players using a free accompanying mobile app to manage their funds. (Each player is required to have their own phone.) The game begins with downloading the Mobile Banking App, which makes purchases and rent automatic. Players select a token and a matching bank card, then scan it to the app.
In the new version, the board’s two most expensive properties—Boardwalk and Park Place—will be replaced by Rocket Launch Pad and Moon.
Monopoly fans who want to play the old-fashioned way can stick to the original version, which will still be available. And that’s a good thing, because not everybody likes the idea of a cash-free version of the game.”
