If you’ve been hanging out for the new Formula 1-themed KitKat range, you might need to hit the brakes for a bit longer. In a story that sounds more like a blockbuster than a chocolate launch, an entire shipment of the highly anticipated bars has vanished without a trace.

And we’re not talking about a couple of missing cartons. More than 12 tonnes of chocolate — that’s a staggering 413,793 KitKats — have disappeared somewhere in Europe. It’s the kind of logistical mystery that leaves everyone asking the same question: how do you lose a whole truck full of chocolate?

The truck left a production facility in central Italy, bound for Poland, where the new F1 range was set to be distributed across Europe. But somewhere along the 1,200–1,300km journey, the truck, its driver, and the entire load went completely off the radar. Authorities and the logistics company are still trying to figure out exactly where things went wrong. The good news? No injuries have been reported.

Now, you’d expect a corporate response to be all serious and straight-laced — but Nestlé leaned into the absurdity with a bit of humour.

“We’ve always encouraged people to have a break with KitKat, but it seems thieves have taken the message too literally and made a break with more than 12 tonnes of our chocolate,” a spokesperson said.

Behind the laughs, though, there’s a real issue. Cargo theft is becoming more organised and more frequent across global supply chains, and this chocolate heist is a pretty eye-catching example.

So what exactly is missing?

The entire shipment was made up of the new Formula 1 collaboration range — including standard F1-branded bars, a new KitKat Chunky variant, and even chocolates moulded into the shape of Formula 1 cars. Yep, the full collector’s set… now in the hands of some very lucky (and slightly dodgy) operators.

While the thieves clearly have great taste, offloading such a unique product won’t be easy. Every bar is linked to specific batch codes, meaning if these chocolates start popping up online or in random shops, they can be traced back to the stolen shipment.

For now, the chocolate remains missing in action. Whether it was a carefully planned operation or a case of right place, wrong time, it’s easily one of the strangest heists of the year.

And let’s be honest… if this doesn’t end up as a true crime podcast or movie, something’s gone wrong.
