One Australian couple couldn’t agree on whose surname to take after getting married, so they came up with a brilliantly unusual solution – they let their families decide!
Melbourne newlyweds Brett Borland and Georgie Abela hosted a full-blown “Battle of the Surname” at their wedding reception, where both families competed in games including tug-of-war, sack races, trivia and relay events. The prize? The winning family’s surname would become the couple’s new shared last name.
After a day of fierce but friendly competition, Team Abela came out on top, meaning Brett officially became Brett Abela after the wedding. The couple said it was the perfect way to involve both families in their big day while settling the surname debate once and for all.
It’s certainly one way to avoid an argument – although if your family’s as competitive as mine, Christmas lunch might never be the same again!
