Born on the cost of Port Elizabeth , South Africa, Ekon, started early in pursuit of finding a place for his voice.
Raised in a Dutch reform Community, he was shown to be a natural born leader with a heart for people, so he set out to pursue a career that fit. He obtained a diploma in ministry and very soon found himself in the position of teaching and training others. This developed his natural ability for public speaking and finding the joy in relating to people in a heartfelt way. Over the years many commented that he had a commanding voice for radio.
After moving to Australia in the 90s, he decided a good way to continue to use his God given gifts and entertain people, was taxi driving. That way, he could inform and share fun facts about Tasmania while taking people on tours, plus make money while using his voice in an animated way. After seven years, it was time to retire and pursue his dream of radio.
In the evolution of progress, professional training and mentoring was in his sights. RadioVoice, a Radio & Podcasting Skills Building Program, was his first choice. Ekon knew he found what he was looking for all those years ago. With a personalised teaching style, it was fast and furiously tailored for him – sink or swim. And itt worked!
With an intensive training schedule, hard work resulted in Ekon landing his first spot in Hobart community radio. In the midst of preparation and recording shows, it was time to upgrade his home studio for a professional sound, because Ekon knew in his heart that he would never be fully satisfied until he found that “signature sound” and a station that shared his passion and desire for excellence. So, for him to achieve that, it meant his studio equipment and delivery needed to meet that professional standard. Well, Ekon was stoked the day his investment paid off. When he was offered a spot on the buzzz, he was surprised, thankful and challenged all at the same time.
Ekon is keeping it in high gear for he knows that “hitting the big time” comes with big responsibility.
In his free time you can find Ekon behind the mic reading for commercials and audio books, or taking a break for an “out and about” with his bride. Yet his passion for radio and production never leaves him. Always driven to learn new skills, while seeking to improve to add value in producing interesting and entertaining shows.
Ekon is exited to continue building his audience that enjoys listening to the classics of the 70s and 80s.
